November 2022 – favorite reminders and one-liners from Papa:
Ashley: “Did you every very many of the old folks?” and the Les Mis soundtrack
Katie: “I work hard and I play hard.”
Reminds them of Papa: driving in nice cars
Barrett: “You get credit for what you finish and not for what you start.”
Reminds them of Papa: any candy that I squirrel away and keep a little stash of
Jason: “Three things: I’ll always be stronger, wiser, and older than you.”
Reminds him of Papa: a firm handshake. Although no one shakes hands like Leon did
Cole: “clothes don’t make the man, but they sure do point him out!”
Brandon: “Hello all you lucky people” as he came in the door. “Life…more sweet than bitter.”
Skylar: I liked how he would tell a joke and if it didn’t get a big enough laugh, he would say “that was supposed to be funny.”
Pete: I always liked how he would make sure everyone was listening before he said something. “I need to say something.” It was always something really wise that we never knew before.
Chase: “You do well academically, you can write you own story.” I’m grateful Papa instilled in us a drive to do well academically, as well as all aspects of life. I still think of him and his encouragement anytime I’m faced with lots of homework or studying.
Ryan: “Victory in the defense of justice is no vice. Just let that sink in.”
Clay: Ah, “but moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”
Nana: he always was a deep thinker.
Brynn: “Let’s keep in touch” is one of my favorite sayings. And he did just that – stayed in contact with people like no one else. He was genuine about it. Despite the many different directions he was pulled in life, he was never too busy to check in. Love that about him.
Alli: “Well, that’s just your opinion.” Cannon tell you all how much I either use this or want to use this in conversation. There are so many cute things he said, but this one always made me laugh. He was a man of many opinions, but he was always willing to listen to yours, too. Such a great conversationalist and easy to talk to. He could talk with anyone, whether they agreed or not. Love and miss him.
Nana: I can’t forget the middle of the Halloween night after he overdosed on pine nuts and needed surgery to remove his gall bladder!
Justin: I remember that! The most painful experience of his life he would often recall.
Brynn: “Music is what feelings sound like.” A classic. And to go with that…something that reminds me of Papa almost daily is singing the songs to Louisa that he sang to most of us which include: Edelweiss, You are my sunshine, Hey Joe, Springtime in the Rockies
“Opportunity doesn’t knock… it presents itself when you beat down the door.”
“Hello all you lucky people.”
“If that’s the worst thing that happens to me today, then I’m doing alright!”
“Absolutely INCREDIBLE!”
We eat what we order
